Lucy S. Beauchamp Named Development Director

at the

Belmont Bay Science Center

WOODBRIDGE — The SciencePort Science Center has named Lucy S. Beauchamp as development director for the SciencePort Science Center Foundation. “I’m pleased to welcome Lucy,” says SciencePort Executive Director Jack Parry. “She brings enthusiasm and energy towards fundraising. She is a well known leader with a proven track record that will help us raise the $120 million needed to finance construction, fund programs, build research laboratories and classrooms and establish an endowment fund.”

“This is exciting,” says Beauchamp. “ Belmont Bay Science Center is one of two projects that will define Prince William county for the next 50 years. Belmont Bay Science Center is going to be an important addition to the entire Washington region.”

Before coming to Belmont Bay , Beauchamp worked 14 years as regional director for the Prince William United Way . While she was there, annual giving increased from $300,000 to $1.2 million. Beauchamp has been on the Prince William School Board for 13 years. She is also school board chairman — a position she has held for the past 11 years.

Belmont Bay Science Center is to be built on five acres in Belmont Bay Town Center in Woodbridge . The riverside site is where the Occoquan and Potomac rivers meet and is adjacent to the new Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Plans also call for a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Gallery about the refuge.

Virginia voters have approved $5 million for construction. An additional $589,000 has been awarded by the federal government. Land for the center has been offered by Belmont Bay developer Preston Caruthers. Current plans call for the facility to be up and running in late 2007.

Belmont Bay Science Center is a division of the Science Museum of Virginia. Center plans call for exhibition galleries, school programs, continuing educational programs for adults and learning resources. The center will focus on technology, physical sciences and life sciences. Both informal and formal programs for school-aged children will be aligned with Virginia ’s Standards of Learning. George Mason University plans to establish a presence in the Science Center with research laboratories and classrooms.

The Belmont Bay Science Center will educate people about biodiversity. It will work with George Mason University and the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The center will also support science education in local schools.
