Search Begins For

Virginia’s Outstanding Scientist

and

Virginia’s Outstanding Industrialist

RICHMOND – The Science Museum of Virginia and the Commonwealth of Virginia are conducting their annual statewide search for Virginia’s Outstanding Scientist and Virginia’s Outstanding Industrialist of 2008.

These prestigious awards were created in 1984 to recognize and honor the excellence of scientific research and the strength of leadership in business and industry throughout the Commonwealth. Nominees have a tie to Virginia either through birth, work and/or the effect of that work on Virginia.

Virginia’s Outstanding Scientist is selected for a recent contribution to basic scientific research that extends the boundaries of any field of science. To qualify a contribution should be easily recognizable as a significant advance of knowledge or a technological development.

Virginia’s Outstanding Industrialist is selected for a distinct contribution to a business or industry that has advanced business development through the innovative use of science or technology. Consideration will also be given to the individual’s service to the community.

An individual may also be honored for a lifetime of achievement in science or industry. This award is not given on an annual basis, but at the discretion of the jurors. An individual may also be awarded the Beverly Orndorff Award for Exceptional Service to Public Understanding of Science. This award is also not given on an annual basis, but at the discretion of the jurors.

Nominations will be accepted by the Science Museum of Virginia through 5 p.m., November 15, 2007.  The awards presentation is scheduled for Thursday, April 17, 2008.
